The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
