The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
