The New Mayor Vows a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Address
On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an bold commencement to his term.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.
An Ambitious Policy Agenda
Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
- A pilot of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Dynamics
The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past comments.
Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
